Fire Fighter I

Fire Fighter I utilizes NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications (2013), NFPA 1051 Standard for Wildland Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications (2016), and NFPA 472 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents to provide the qualifications for State Fire Training’s Fire Fighter I certification.

Fire Fighter I Reciprocity:

Certification Information

The Fire Fighter I reciprocity program is intended for Out-Of-State and DoD Fire Fighters who have received training and/or employment in another state and are now seeking certification/employment in California. The following materials are available to help assist with this process:

Requirements Process Chart Fee Schedule Application Checklist

Reciprocity applicants will need to submit by mail only a completed reciprocity application form, supporting documentation, reciprocity review fee and fee schedule form. A review will be conducted to verify all submitted documentation. If eligible, SFT will then determine whether additional testing (written and/or skills) will need to be completed and then issue a Fire Fighter I certification task book. Upon completion of all requirements (including successful completion of both the written & skills examinations and the Fire Fighter I task book) and the submittal of a FF I application form, certification fee and fee schedule, a California Fire Fighter I certification w/optional IFSAC and Pro Board seals will be issued.

Fire Fighter I IFSAC/Pro Board Upgrade Information:

The Fire Fighter I upgrade program is intended for California certified Fire Fighters who have received certification under the 2001 curriculum and are now looking to upgrade their state certification to a state and nationally recognized IFSAC/Pro Board certification. The following materials are available to help assist with this process:

Requirements Process Chart Fee Schedule Application Checklist

Eligible California certified fire fighter applicants will need to submit by mail or appointment only a completed upgrade application form, supporting documentation, upgrade review fee and fee schedule form. A review will be conducted to verify all submitted documentation. If eligible, SFT will then issue an exam authorization form. Upgrade applicants will need take this authorization form to an open-enrollment accredited academy to schedule the certification examination. Upon successful completion of certification examination and the submittal of the exam results including your original upgrade application, certification fee and fee schedule, California Fire Fighter I certification w/ IFSAC and Pro Board seals will be issued.

Update the Authorized Fire Chief Database

To successfully receive a California OSFM Fire Fighter certification, the Fire Chief or authorized signatory signing the experience section of the Fire Fighter Certification Task Book must be listed in the SFT Authorized Chief database before the certification task book can be submitted. To update your Chief or to add an authorized signatory, please review the Authorized Chief or Signatory Information Bulletin.
