  • 02/2021 - Title 19 Stakeholder Meeting: The Office of the State Fire Marshal – State Fire Training has scheduled a stakeholder meeting for February 16, 2021, at 1:30 pm regarding proposed modifications to California Code of Regulations, Title 19, Division 1, Chapter 13, related to State Fire Training – 2021 Procedures Manual updates. 2020

  • 12/2020 - Fire Fighter 1: SFT has issued the FF Certification Options Information Bulletin (PDF) to clarify and guide applicants, training officers, and agencies through the various certification options for Fire Fighter 1 (2013), Fire Fighter 1 (2019), Fire Fighter 2 (2013), Fire Fighter 2 (2013) Tenured Path, and Fire Fighter 2 (2019).
  • 12/2020 - FF1C Textbook Update: SFT has adopted a second textbook that can be used for the Fire Fighter 1C: Wildland (PDF) course. Wildland instructors and training agencies may now use either the Firefighter's Handbook on Wildland Firefighting: Strategy, Tactics and Safety, Fourth Edition, or the new Wildland Fire Fighter: Principles and Practice, Second Edition. Both textbooks have been correlated to the FF1C: Wildland Certification Examination.
  • 12/2020 - Emergency Vehicle Technician (2020): SFT completed a curriculum and certification update to the EVT program in order to align with the 2020 edition of NFPA 1071: Standard for Emergency Vehicle Technician Professional Qualifications. As a reminder, the legacy Fire Mechanic courses and Certification will retire on December 31, 2021.
  • 12/2020 - Chief Fire Officer & Fire Inspector curriculum update: The Chief Fire Officer 3D: Emergency Service Delivery Responsibilities (2014) and Fire Inspector 2C (2010) curriculum will retire on December 31, 2020. The curriculum has been updated and replaced. Chief Fire Officer 3D was realigned to expand/extend Type 3 incidents to include industry best practices. All Registered Instructors and host agencies delivering these courses will be required to deliver the new Chief Fire Officer 3D: Command of Expanding All-Hazard Incidents (2019) (PDF) and Fire Inspector 2C (2014)(PDF) beginning January 1, 2021. Both versions of the courses will be accepted toward their respective certifications.
  • 10/2020 - Behaviorial Health & Cancer Awareness Curriculum: Behavioral Health and Cancer Awareness 1A: Front-Line Responder (2020) (PDF) is an 8-hour course and is the first in the series of courses intended to address the need for creating an Awareness level course (firefighter, crew member). This course is available to be included within the Fire Fighter 1A: Structure (PDF) course plan. Behavioral Health and Cancer Awareness 2A: First-Level Supervisor (2020) (PDF) is a 24-hour course intended to provide leadership-level information and best practices for cancer mitigation and behavioral health for the aspiring Company Officer and fire service leaders. Behavioral Health and Cancer Awareness 3A: Organizational Leader (2020) (PDF) is a 24-hour course intended to provide chief-officer-level information on developing inclusive cancer prevention and behavioral health and wellness programs.   • 10/2020 - Fire Control 3 Curriculum (2018): The Fire Control 3: Structural Firefighting (2018)(PDF) course provides the student the opportunity for learning the basics of fire dynamics, chemistry and physics, structural fire behavior, structural fire attack tactics, and providing the knowledge and the opportunity for demonstrating their skills in locating, controlling, and extinguishing an interior structure fire. The Instructor: Live Fire Training – Fixed Facility (2018)(PDF) course prepares instructors to teach Fire Control 3: Live Fire Fighting (2018). This course provides future instructors an opportunity to learn and demonstrate the skills for instructing fire fighters in locating, controlling, and extinguishing an interior structure fire using a fixed facility. The Instructor: Live Fire Training – Acquired Structure (2018)(PDF) course prepares an instructor to teach Fire Control 3: Live Fire Fighting (2018) using an acquired structure. This course provides the students an opportunity to learn and demonstrate the skills for instructing fire fighters in locating, controlling, and extinguishing an interior structure fire using an acquired structure. Fire Control 3 A/B Structural Fire Fighting (2009) retires on December 31, 2021. Additional information can be found in the Implementation Plan (PDF).
  • 10/2020 - Rope Rescue Awareness/Operations Curriculum: Rope Rescue Awareness/Operations (2017)(PDF) course provides information on low-angle and high-angle rescue, familiarizing participants with the operation of simple, complex, and compound rope rescue systems environments. Rope Rescue Technician (2017)(PDF) course provides information on high-angle rescue, familiarizing participants with the operation of simple, complex, and compound rope rescue systems in the high-angle environment. Rope Rescue Technician (2013) curriculum,  Rescue Systems 1: Rope Rescue (Module 1) curriculum, and Rescue Systems 1: Ladder Rescue Systems (Module 3) will retire on June 30, 2021.   • 10/2020 - Upgrade Candidates: SFT has removed the 10-year requirement for candidates who have an existing California Fire Fighter 1 or 2 Certification and seek to add IFSAC or Pro Board seals. Candidates must apply for an upgrade to obtain an exam authorization from State Fire Training before enrolling in the certification exam. See the Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter 2 Upgrade applications for additional information. 
  • 10/2020 - Reciprocity Candidates: Candidates who are seeking Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter 2 reciprocity using out-of-state or Department of Defense IFSAC and/or Pro Board Certifications must have certifications issued within the last 10 years. Candidates who hold IFSAC and/or Pro Board seals that are more than 10 years old must take the California Certification exam(s) to qualify for reciprocity.   • 10/2020 - Psychomotor Skills Exam Changes: SFT has updated the random skills notification process, clarified random skill delivery expectations, and added an option for alternate psychomotor skills evaluation for the Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter 2 Certification Exams. ALAs, ARTPs, Registered Lead Evaluators, and Registered Skills Evaluators should review the process changes. SFT withdrew the changes to the Skill 3-10c for Fire Fighter 1 Certification Exams. ALAs and ARTPs can continue to simulate the skill if a registered Fire Control 3 course is conducted with all candidates.   • 10/2020 - Fire Inspector 2C (2016) Implementation Plan: In December 2019, the SBFS approved the Fire Inspector 2 curriculum and Certification update. One of the significant changes was the addition of eight (8) hours to the Fire Inspector 2C (2014) course plan (PDF). The approval by STEAC and SBFS did not include an Implementation Plan (PDF) to show the  Fire Inspector 2C (2010) course retirement. SFT will be retiring the Fire Inspector 2C (2010) on December 31, 2020. All Registered Instructors and host agencies will be required to deliver the Fire Inspector 2C (2014) beginning January 1, 2021.
  • 10/2020 - Fire Marshal Certification & Instructor Registration: The education requirements for Fire Marshal Certification require the completion of the G-290 Basic PIO. SFT will accept S-203 Introduction to Incident Information to meet this education requirement. SFT has clarified the Fire Marshal instructor experience requirements. Instructors are required to demonstrate that they are a subject matter expert for each course topic. For more information, please see the Interim Procedure (PDF).
  • 10/2020 - Fire Fighter 1 (2019) - Fire Fighter 1C: Wildland Update: NFPA released the 2020 edition of NFPA 1051: Standard Wildland Firefighting Personnel Professional Qualifications in September 2019. SFT uses NFPA 1051 as a basis for the Fire Fighter 1, Company Officer, and Chief Fire Officer training standards and certification requirements. An administrative review has been conducted to evaluate the changes between the 2016 and 2020 editions of NFPA 1051 for the Wildland Fire Fighter 1 level. There are no substantial changes to Fire Fighter 1 (2019) (in total course hours or cost) to the training standards.   • 10/2020 - Acadis Maintenance: The SFT User Portal, the Testing Portal, and supporting resources such as the Training Catalog, etc. may be unavailable due to routinely scheduled maintenance. Learn about scheduled outages by reviewing the Acadis Portal Maintenance Information Bulletin (PDF).

  • 05/2020 - Updated: ICS 300/ICS 400 Curriculum and Instructor Requirements. FEMA's Emergency Management Institute (EMI) released updated curriculum for ICS 300 and ICS 400, therefore SFT is retiring the old 2013 ICS 300 and ICS 400 curriculum on June 30, 2020. Existing Registered Instructors are required to complete an ICS Instructor Update Web Form on or before June 30, 2020. Instructors who fail to complete the Web Form will lose their instructor status for ICS 300 and/or ICS 400. The Instructor Update can be completed through the SFT User Portal. Once the Web Form is completed, Registered Instructors can teach the new 2019 curriculum. See the Implementation Plan (PDF) for more information.
  • 05/2020 - CSU Humboldt State Bachelor Program. SFT and CSU Humboldt State University are excited to announce a pathway to a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. Students can now pursue higher education within the California State University system using the Chief Fire Officer courses as elective credit. The CSU Humboldt State Bachelor of Arts degree is 100% online. For more information about the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, review the SFT Information Bulletin (PDF), the SFT's CSU Humboldt State Bachelor Program web page, and visit the CSU Humboldt State website for enrollment information.
  • 05/2020 - The OSFM is providing Notice of Scheduled Public Hearing (PDF) of proposed modifications to California Code of Regulations, Title 19, Division 1, Chapter 13, related to State Fire Training – fee increase adjustment to certification and training standards for California fire service personnel.  Pursuant to Government Code Section 11346.8, the OSFM will hold a public hearing on the proposed action on Friday, June 5, 2020, at 1:30 pm to accept oral testimony regarding this proposed regulatory action.
  • 04/2020 - The OSFM is providing Notice of a 45-Day Public Comment Period of proposed modifications to California Code of Regulations, Title 19, Division 1, Chapter 13, related to State Fire Training – Fee Increase Adjustment. The Notice (NOPR), Initial Statement of Reasons (ISOR), Text of Regulations (ET),  including the “Documents Incorporated by Reference or Relied Upon” and any other materials may be accessed on the State Fire Marshal website under the tab titled (SFT) State Fire Training – Fire Service Training and Certification - Fee Increase. The OSFM will accept written comments regarding this proposed regulatory action for 45 days beginning April 10, 2020, and ending May 25, 2020.
  • 03/2020 - Fire Fighter 1 and 2 (2019) Certification Exam Application. ARTPs and ALAs requesting the Fire Fighter 1 (2019) and/or Fire Fighter 2 (2019) certification exam shall use the Certification Examination (2019) Scheduling Request Application (PDF). Exam requests shall be submitted 6 weeks prior to the first exam through the SFT User Portal, and the Fire Fighter (2019) Academy Roster Template (XLSX) is required to be uploaded at the time of application. ARTPs or ALAs utilizing CSTI or IAFF for Hazardous Material training and certification, need to review the Fire Fighter 1 (2019) CSTI and IAFF Hazardous Material Reciprocity Information Bulletin (PDF) for details on scheduling and returning the Fire Fighter 1 (2019) certification exam. The Fire Fighter Academy Results Template (XLSX) has been updated to include Fire Fighter 2 and will be required to be used when uploading Psychomotor Skills Exam results. The Fire Fighter 1 and 2 (2019) cognitive exams will be delivered through the SFT Testing Portal. Lead Evaluators administering the exams shall review the Cognitive Exam Proctor Instructions (PDF) prior to administering the cognitive exam.
  • 03/2020 - Fire Fighter 2 Skills Evaluator and Lead Evaluator. To be eligible to be a Skills Evaluator and Lead Evaluator for the new Fire Fighter 2 (2019) certification exams, you are required to have an SFT Fire Fighter 2 certification. SFT has completed an administrative review of all current Skills Evaluators and Lead Evaluators who have an SFT Fire Fighter 2 certification listed in their SFT User Portal. All Registered Skill Evaluators and Registered Lead Evaluators with a Fire Fighter 2 certification were issued a Fire Fighter 2 Skills Evaluator and/or Lead Evaluator through the SFT User Portal. If you have an SFT Fire Fighter 2 certification that was not listed, submit a copy of your Fire Fighter 2 Certification with a Registered Skills Evaluator Application (PDF) or Registered Lead Evaluator Application (PDF).
  • 03/2020 - Skills Evaluator Application Requirements Change. Beginning July 1, 2020, all applicants applying to become a Registered Skills Evaluator will be required to have an SFT Instructor 1, Training Instructor 1, or Fire Instructor 1 certification. Additionally, beginning July 1, 2020, all Fire Fighter 1 Skills Evaluator applicants shall possess an SFT Fire Fighter 1 certification. Use the new Registered Skills Evaluator Application (PDF) when applying. Information regarding Skills Evaluator registration can be found on the Evaluator Resources web page.
  • 03/2020 - Chief Fire Officer 3D Course Update. Chief Fire Officer 3D (2019) (PDF) will be phased-in to the California Fire Service Training and Education System. This course has been realigned to include expanding/extended Type 3 incidents, allowing for dual certification with the NWCG S-300 Extended Attack Incident Commander course. S-300 is the base course for CICCS certification as an Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3). Chief Fire Officer 3D (2014) will retire on December 31, 2020. For Chief Fire Officer Certification, an applicant may use the 2014 or 2019 course. The Chief Fire Officer 3D (2019) Implementation Plan (PDF) has additional information regarding these changes.
  • 03/2020 - Fire Fighter 1A: Structure (2019) - Behavioral Health and Cancer Awareness. The SBFS and the STEAC have approved two Behavioral Health and Cancer Awareness topics to be incorporated into the Fire Fighter 1A: Structure Course Plan (PDF). This will add Topic 2-3: Stress and Resilience and Topic 2-4: Cancer Awareness. These eight-course hours were forecasted and incorporated into the Fire Fighter 1A: Structure Course Plan, so there is no added course time. SFT will be adding stand-alone Behavioral Health and Cancer Awareness FSTEP courses to the SFT course catalog later this year.
  • 03/2020 - Fire Fighter 2 (2013) Tenured Path. The Fire Fighter 2 (2013) Tenured Path is designed for fire fighters who meet and exceed all required prerequisites, education, and training standards set forth by SFT for Fire Fighter 2 certification but do not have an SFT Fire Fighter 1 certification. The Fire Fighter 2 Tenured Path is for the experienced applicant that has not completed the Fire Fighter 1 Certification Examination and is now seeking continued professional development within the SFT system. Agencies and stakeholders are encouraged to review the Implementation Plan (PDF) and the updated Fire Fighter 2 (2013) web page for more information. Fire Fighter 2 (2013) and Fire Fighter 2 (2013) Tenured Path Certification retires December 31, 2021. Beginning January 1, 2022, all applicants shall be required to use the new Fire Fighter 2 (2019) Certification, which requires certification exams.
  • 03/2020 - The River and Flood Water Rescue (1996) course retired on June 30, 2020. Agencies should utilize the River and Flood Rescue Technician (2018) course as a replacement for River and Flood Water Rescue (1996). The River and Flood Rescue Technician (2019) Implementation Plan (PDF) has additional information regarding these changes.
  • 03/2020 - Open certification task books have modified the application process for professional certification. All applications for certification have been updated to reflect the open task book changes and certification checklists have been retired due to the improvements in the application forms.
  • 03/2020 - The Course Roster Template had been updated. The updated template now includes student phone numbers. 
  • 01/2020 - NEW Fire Fighter (2019). Effective January 1, 2020, the new Fire Fighter 1 (2019) and Fire Fighter 2 (2019) Certifications and Curriculum are available! The Certification Training Standards along with four new Course Plans have been developed based on current NFPA Professional Qualifications and are approved by the STEAC and the SBFS. Agencies and stakeholders are encouraged to review the Implementation Plan (PDF) and the new Fire Fighter 1 (2019) and Fire Fighter 2 (2019) webpages for more information. 

    NEW: The Fire Fighter 2 (2019) Certification is now nationally accredited by IFSAC and is in the final stages of Pro Board accreditation! As a result, SFT has a Certification Upgrade Process (PDF) for those who already have an SFT Fire Fighter 2 Certification and wish to upgrade. Additionally, SFT now has a Reciprocity Process (PDF) for those with an IFSAC and/or Pro Board Fire Fighter 2 Certification from another State.     UPDATED: SFT aligned the Fire Fighter 1 (2013) Certification requirements with the Fire Fighter 1 (2019) Certification. This means that the Fire Fighter 1 Certification Task Book (2013) (PDF) will no longer be required for Fire Fighter 1 (2013) Certification; however, a completed Fire Fighter 1 Certification Task Book (2013) will be required to be on file with SFT for applicants to obtain Fire Fighter 2 (2013) Certification. The Fire Fighter (2019) Implementation Plan (PDF) has additional information regarding these changes.

  • 01/2020 - NEW Skills Coach Instructor type. This new Skills Coach Instructor type can be used to assist the Registered Primary Instructor or Fire Fighter Instructor. 
  • 01/2020 - Digital Certification Certificates are now available through the SFT User Portal.
  • 01/2020 - Fire Inspector 2 curriculum and certification. The Fire Inspector 2 curriculum and certification have been updated to align with the 2014 edition of NFPA 1031.
  • 01/2020 - Fire Investigator updates. Following the April 12, 2019, Statewide Training and Advisory Committee (STEAC) Meeting, the recommended administrative changes were made to the Fire Investigator Application and Certification Checklist and the curriculum and certification have been updated to align with the 2014 edition of NFPA 1031.
  • 01/2020 - CFSTES Course Prerequisites. CSFTES course prerequisites for most mid-career CFSTES courses will be updated throughout 2020 to allow career experience to substitute fulfillment. 
  • 01/2020 - Course Reciprocity for eligible Pro Board and/or IFSAC. Effective January 1, 2020, SFT will now accept Pro Board and/or IFSAC Certifications as course reciprocity; however, some certification tracks will still require that the candidate complete additional SFT courses to ensure that the student has specific knowledge for working in California.

  • 08-2018 - Many Certifications will retire this year including Chief Officer, Fire Investigator I and Fire Investigator II. Additionally, Fire Marshal and Fire Mechanic I, II, and III all retire on 12-31-2019.
